Archival Overview
Pioneering expressionist painter, co-founder of the influential 'Aouchem' (Tattoo) modern art movement in 1967 alongside Baya Mahieddine and Mustapha Adane.
Biographical Record
Rezki Zérarti was born in Taourga (Boumerdès province). An instinctive, visionary painter of raw expressive power, he held his first major solo exhibition at the Galerie 54 in Algiers in 1964, prefaced enthusiastically by poet Jean Sénac.
In 1967, Zérarti co-founded the historic 'Aouchem' (Tattoo) movement, which rejected both sterile Western academicism and conservative miniature realism to rediscover the ancestral signs, cave engravings, and Berber tattoos of the Maghreb. His vibrant, spontaneous canvases hang in national museums and private collections worldwide.
