Archival Overview
One of Cuba's greatest visual masters whose kaleidoscopic canvases, stained-glass motifs, and celebrated series 'Color de Cuba' and 'Flora' captured the baroque soul, architecture, and fiestas of Havana.
Biographical Record
René Portocarrero was born in El Cerro, Havana, on February 24, 1912. Largely self-taught, Portocarrero joined the artistic circles around the literary journal Orígenes in the 1940s, collaborating closely with José Lezama Lima.
His painting exploded into dazzling chromatic complexity: intricate line drawings depicting Havana's colonial iron railings, lush stained-glass windows, carnival dancers, and iconic female portraits in the celebrated Flora series. He represented Cuba at the São Paulo and Venice Biennales, winning worldwide acclaim.
