René Perez

René Perez was born in Oran and was recognized in childhood as a prodigy of traditional Andalusian song. Trained by master musicians of the Oran municipal conservatory, he possessed a crystalline, emotive tenor voice capable of executing the delicate vocal turns ('Inshad') of classical Arabic poetry.

Perez collaborated with both Algerian Jewish and Muslim masters, performing with Maurice El Médioni and preserving rare Hawzi and Melhoun suites. His recordings remain definitive reference documents for ethnomusicologists studying western Algerian classical traditions.
