"I do not wish to speak of myself, for I am convinced that what matters is the work, not the person who made it."

Archival Overview

Spanish-Mexican Surrealist master celebrated for her jewel-like, intricately rendered paintings uniting medieval alchemy, sacred geometry, astronomy, and mystic journeying.

Biographical Record

Remedios Varo studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid before joining the Parisian Surrealist circle through her partner, poet Benjamin Péret. Fleeing the Nazi occupation of France in 1941, she found permanent sanctuary in Mexico City, where her artistic genius achieved its fullest flowering.

Varo executed her canvases with the meticulous delicacy of an illuminated manuscript, blending tempera and oil with inlaid mother-of-pearl and scraped glazes. Her paintings feature solitary, contemplative figures inside Gothic towers weaving starlight, transmuting matter, and constructing ingenious mechanical contraptions driven by cosmic harmony.
