Archival Overview
Master blind Jewish-Algerian singer and oud virtuoso whose peerless interpretations of Andalusian, Hawzi, and Chaabi music symbolized the shared Judeo-Arabic cultural heritage of Algeria.
Biographical Record
Sultana Daoud, affectionately known as Reinette l'Oranaise, was blinded by smallpox at age two. Her mother encouraged her to study music, enrolling her under the tutelage of legendary master Messaoud El Medioni (Saoud l'Oranais) in Oran.
Reinette mastered the oud and Andalusian vocal scales, becoming the shining star of Radio Oran in the 1930s and 1940s. Exiled to France in 1962, she lived in humble obscurity until rediscovery in the 1980s, when she returned to global acclaim, performing her beloved Algerian repertoire in sold-out concert halls from Paris to New York.
