Archival Overview
Incomparable hockey champion who won the first Norris Trophy as a defenseman with Detroit, switched to center to win four Cups with Toronto, and served as an MP.
Biographical Record
Leonard Patrick "Red" Kelly accomplished one of the most extraordinary dual careers in professional sports history. Playing defense for the Detroit Red Wings, Kelly won the inaugural James Norris Memorial Trophy in 1954 and four Stanley Cups as part of the "Production Line" dynasty.
Traded to the Maple Leafs in 1960, coach Punch Imlach converted Kelly to center, where he checked Montreal's Jean Béliveau and led Toronto to four more Stanley Cup titles. Astonishingly, while starring for the Leafs, Kelly was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1962, serving as a Liberal Member of Parliament while playing NHL hockey on weekends.
