Archival Overview

Paramount Head Chief of the Kainai (Blood) Nation who signed Treaty 7 in 1877 and guided his people through transition to ranching and education.

Biographical Record

Mekaisto, known to English settlers as Red Crow, was the supreme warrior and diplomat of the Kainai (Blood) nation of the Blackfoot Confederacy. A fierce warrior who fought in over thirty-three battles in his youth, he succeeded Seen From Afar as head chief in 1870, recognized for his calm wisdom and strategic realism.

Red Crow signed Treaty 7 at Blackfoot Crossing in 1877, successfully demanding that the Kainai receive their own expansive reserve in their traditional hunting grounds along the Belly and St. Mary Rivers—still the largest reserve in Canada today. He rejected starvation dependency, building prosperous cattle herds and founding schools while staunchly preserving Blackfoot religious ceremonies.
