"They made us many promises, more than I can remember, but they never kept but one; they promised to take our land, and they took it."

Archival Overview

Renowned Oglala Lakota leader who defeated the United States Army in Red Cloud's War, forcing the abandonment of forts along the Bozeman Trail.

Biographical Record

Red Cloud was a paramount chief of the Oglala Lakota who rose to prominence through military prowess and strategic acumen. When the US government constructed forts along the Bozeman Trail cutting through prime Lakota hunting grounds, Red Cloud launched a relentless campaign of resistance from 1866 to 1868.

His forces shut down the trail and defeated US detachments, culminating in the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868, in which the US military completely evacuated the forts—making Red Cloud the only Native American leader to win a war against the United States government.
