Archival Overview
European-Algerian communist social worker and ALN nurse who joined the freedom fighters in the Aurès mountains, killed in combat with weapon in hand in 1957.
Biographical Record
Raymonde Peschard was born in El Eulma (Sétif province). Working as a dedicated social worker for the state railway company in Constantine, she was horrified by the brutal poverty and institutional violence inflicted on indigenous Algerians, joining the Algerian Communist Party (PCA) to fight for social equality.
Falsely accused of complicity in an urban bombing, she made the courageous choice to join the armed struggle in the maquis of Wilaya 1 (Aurès-Nememcha). Known by her revolutionary nom-de-guerre 'Taous', she served as a front-line nurse and combatant until November 26, 1957, when her unit was surrounded at Mdoukal and she was killed in combat defending the wounded.
