"Football is an art of geometry and timing; when you find the empty space, the goal opens before you."

Archival Overview

Belgium's first true international football superstar who scored 141 goals for Beerschot, led Sparta Prague to the Mitropa Cup in 1935 as continental Europe's highest-paid player, and starred at the 1928 Olympics.

Biographical Record

Scoring his first goal for Beerschot VAC at age fifteen, Braine was a clinical striker with peerless aerial ability and ball control. In 1930, after the Belgian Football Association banned him for opening a café in breach of strict amateurism rules, Braine signed with Sparta Prague.

In Czechoslovakia, Braine became the first Belgian professional player, winning two Czechoslovak league titles and the 1935 Mitropa Cup (precursor to the UEFA Champions League) as top scorer. Reinstated to the national team in 1935, he captained the Red Devils at the 1938 FIFA World Cup in France.
