Biographical Record
Educated at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées and MIT, Aubrac joined the underground resistance in Lyon in 1940. Alongside Lucie, Emmanuel d'Astier de La Vigerie, and Jean Cavaillès, he founded Libération-Sud and directed the paramilitary Armée Secrète in the southern zone.
On June 21, 1943, Aubrac was arrested by Klaus Barbie at Doctor Dugoujon's villa in Caluire alongside Jean Moulin. Sentenced to death, he was rescued in October 1943 in Lyon during a breathtaking daylight ambush led by his pregnant wife Lucie on a German prison truck. In 1944, General de Gaulle appointed him Commissaire de la République for liberated Marseille.
