Biographical Record

Abba Arika (175–247 CE), known simply as Rav ('The Master'), was the nephew of Rabbi Hiyya who studied under Judah ha-Nasi in the Galilee.

Returning to Mesopotamia in 219 CE, he established the Academy of Sura, authoring majestic prayers (including Aleinu and the High Holy Day Musaf) and shaping Jewish civil law.
