Influential Islamic scholar, editor, and political theorist who founded the seminal Cairo-based journal 'Al-Manar' in 1898, continuing the modernist reform tradition of Muhammad Abduh while articulating an early vision of the modern Islamic state.
Biographical Record
Moving from Tripoli to Cairo in 1897 to work alongside Muhammad Abduh, Rida founded Al-Manar, which circulated across the Islamic world from West Africa to Indonesia for nearly four decades as the leading organ of intellectual reform.
He documented Abduh's life in a monumental three-volume biography and continued the publication of Tafsir al-Manar. His political treatises, notably The Caliphate or the Supreme Imamate (1922), deeply shaped 20th-century Islamic political philosophy.
