Archival Overview
Faithful companion of Idris I who helped him escape Baghdad, raised and educated infant Idris II with Kenza, and served as Regent of Morocco until his assassination in 802 AD.
Biographical Record
Rashid was a loyal freedman and brilliant strategist who engineered the perilous escape of Moulay Idris I across Egypt and North Africa to Morocco following the Battle of Fakhkh. When Idris I was poisoned by an Abbasid spy in 791 AD, Kenza was pregnant with his unborn child.
Rashid took custody of the infant Idris II, training him in Arabic literature, statecraft, equestrian warfare, and Islamic jurisprudence. Acting as Regent, Rashid consolidated the tribes and repulsed Abbasid incursions until Abbasid governor Ibrahim ibn al-Aghlab had him assassinated in 802 AD, dying a martyr of dynastic fidelity.
