Archival Overview
Beloved Lebanese emigrant poet known as 'The Complaining Poet', founding member of the New York Pen League.
Biographical Record
Rashid Ayyub was born in Baskinta in Mount Lebanon and worked as a merchant in Paris and Manchester before emigrating to New York City in 1908. Joining the vibrant circle of Lebanese-American writers, he was a founding member of the Pen League alongside his fellow townsman Mikhail Naimy in 1920.
Ayyub earned the affectionate title 'Al-Sha'ir al-Shaki' (The Complaining Poet) because his verse was characterized by a gentle, wistful melancholy, longing for the mountain springs of Lebanon while navigating the bustling materialism of Manhattan. His published collections include Al-Ayyubiyyat, Songs of the Darwish, and The Broken Lyre.
