Biographical Record

Raffaello Sanzio (1483–1520), born in Urbino, completed the supreme triad of High Renaissance masters alongside Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Summoned to Rome by Pope Julius II in 1508, the youthful Raphael was commissioned to fresco the papal apartments (Stanze di Raffaello) in the Apostolic Palace.

His masterpiece in the Stanza della Segnatura, The School of Athens (1511), depicts the great philosophers of antiquity—Plato and Aristotle at the center—in flawless architectural and spatial harmony. Renowned for his radiant Madonnas and papal portraits, Raphael served as chief architect of St. Peter's and overseer of Roman antiquities before his tragic death on his 37th birthday.
