Queen of Kittur who led one of the earliest armed rebellions against the British East India Company in 1824, defying the aggressive Doctrine of Lapse.
Biographical Record
Rani Chennamma was the queen of the princely state of Kittur in Karnataka. Trained from childhood in archery, sword fighting, and horsemanship, she assumed leadership of the kingdom upon the deaths of her husband and only son, adopting an heir to continue the dynasty.
When the British East India Company attempted to annex Kittur under their doctrine of paramountcy, Chennamma refused to capitulate. In October 1824, she led her troops into battle, killing British Collector John Thackeray and capturing enemy officers. Captured during a subsequent siege, she died in prison in 1829.
