Archival Overview
Seventh President of the Philippines (1953–1957) celebrated as the 'Champion of the Masses' (Idolo ng Masa), who defeated the communist Hukbalahap guerrilla rebellion through clean governance and agrarian resettlement, establishing the Ramon Magsaysay Award.
Biographical Record
Ramon Magsaysay (1907–1957) was an automobile mechanic who organized a 10,000-man guerrilla force in Zambales during the Japanese occupation of World War II. Appointed Secretary of National Defense in 1950, Magsaysay crushed the Hukbalahap communist insurgency not by brute force, but by offering rebel fighters land grants, housing, and cattle in Mindanao (EDCOR project).
Elected President in 1953 in an overwhelming landslide, Magsaysay threw open the gates of Malacañang Palace to ordinary barefoot farmers and fishermen. He wore the traditional barong tagalog, established free legal aid for peasants, and fought bureaucratic corruption before perishing in an airplane crash on Mount Manunggal in 1957; Asia's premier prize for public service bears his name.
