Ramogi Achieng Oneko was born in 1920 in Tieng'a, Uyoma, Siaya. A pioneering journalist, he founded and edited the influential Luo-language newspaper Ramogi and served as secretary of the Kenya African Union (KAU).
In 1951, Oneko and Mbiyu Koinange travelled to London and Paris, presenting African grievances to the British parliament and United Nations. Arrested in October 1952 alongside Kenyatta, he was tried at Kapenguria. Though acquitted on appeal, he was immediately detained under emergency regulations until 1961. Appointed first Minister for Information, Broadcasting and Tourism in 1963, he resigned in 1966 to join Odinga's KPU, enduring further detention for his unbending principles.
