Archival Overview
Second Pharaoh of the Twentieth Dynasty and the last great warrior-monarch of the New Kingdom who saved Egypt from catastrophic annihilation by repelling massive invasions of the Sea Peoples by land and sea.
Biographical Record
Reigning during the turbulent Late Bronze Age collapse when empires across the eastern Mediterranean fell to waves of migrating Sea Peoples, Ramesses III mobilized the Egyptian army and navy to win decisive battles at the Nile Delta and in Djahy (Levant).
He commemorated these triumphs on the walls of his massive fortified mortuary temple at Medinet Habu in western Thebes. His later reign faced domestic strikes and the infamous Harem Conspiracy, in which modern CT scans revealed his throat was fatally severed.
