Archival Overview

The quintessential Pharaoh of the Egyptian New Kingdom. Reigned for 66 years, led military campaigns across the Levant, concluded the world's first recorded international peace treaty, and erected Abu Simbel and the Ramesseum.

Biographical Record

Ramesses II expanded the Egyptian Empire's northern borders, famously fighting the Hittite Empire at the Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BCE. The ensuing Egyptian-Hittite peace treaty (the Eternal Treaty) is preserved in both hieroglyphs and Akkadian cuneiform and is celebrated as the earliest diplomatic peace accord in human history.

His monumental building projects transformed the Egyptian landscape, including the colossal rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel in Nubia and the great hypostyle hall at Karnak.
