Supreme Hindu philosopher-theologian who founded Vishishtadvaita (Qualified Non-Dualism) Vedanta, author of the 'Sri Bhashya', who championed loving devotion (Bhakti) and opened sacred temple mantras to all castes.

Biographical Record

Ramanuja (c. 1017–1137) studied Vedanta in Kanchipuram before succeeding Yamunacharya as the spiritual leader of the great Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam. Rebutting Adi Shankara's strict illusionism (Advaita), Ramanuja argued that the individual soul and material universe are real, forming the divine body of Brahman.

Defying caste orthodoxy, when Ramanuja received the secret liberation mantra from his guru with a warning that sharing it would condemn him to hell, he immediately climbed the temple tower in Tirukoshtiyur and shouted the sacred mantra to the assembled common crowds below, declaring he would happily suffer hell if it saved humanity.
