Biographical Record
Gadadhar Chattopadhyaya was born in rural Bengal and served as chief priest at the Dakshineswar Kali Temple near Calcutta. Experiencing profound spiritual ecstasy (samadhi) from an early age, he spent decades in intense spiritual disciplines under diverse masters of Tantra, Advaita Vedanta, and Vaishnavism.
Ramakrishna also practiced Islamic Sufism and Christian contemplation, realizing that all religious traditions lead to the same supreme reality: 'Joto mot, toto poth' (As many faiths, so many paths). His foremost disciple, Swami Vivekananda, founded the Ramakrishna Math and Mission to carry his message of universal tolerance to the world.
