Archival Overview
Muradid Bey of Tunis (1696–1699) celebrated for his gentle, cultured disposition, love of music and Italian theater, overthrown and assassinated in 1699.
Biographical Record
Ramadan Bey succeeded his brother Muhammad Bey in 1696. Disliking the violent militarism of the era, Ramadan Bey surrounded himself with musicians, scholars, and Italian artists, patronizing secular music and theatrical divertissements in Dar el-Bey.
Entrusting administrative governance to his Florentine-born musician favorite Madan, his court alienated conservative Janissary commanders. In March 1699, his ruthless nephew Murad III launched a surprise insurrection; Ramadan was captured and executed in his palace.
