Biographical Record
Ramadan al-Suwayhli (c. 1879–1920) was a prominent tribal leader and military commander from Misrata. Initially cooperating with the Ottoman authorities, he led Libyan volunteers to resist the 1911 Italian invasion of Tripolitania.
At the pivotal Battle of Qasr Bu Hadi (April 1915), Suwayhli turned his forces against the Italian army, inflicting Italy's worst defeat in Africa since the Battle of Adwa. In November 1918, he co-founded the Tripolitanian Republic (Al-Jumhuriyya al-Trabulsiya), drafting a democratic constitution and defending Libyan regional sovereignty.
