"The Chola navy turns the Bay of Bengal into a Chola lake, carrying our standards to distant islands of the southern seas."

Archival Overview

Chola emperor and thalassocrat who led expeditions to the Ganges River and dispatched a mighty naval armada conquering the Srivijaya Empire in Southeast Asia.

Biographical Record

Rajendra Chola I (reigned 1014–1044 AD), son and successor of Rajaraja I, elevated the Chola Empire into one of the most formidable maritime empires in world history. He completed the total conquest of Sri Lanka, incorporated the Maldive Islands, and marched his armies northward to defeat Mahipala of the Pala dynasty at the sacred Ganges River.

To commemorate his northern triumphs, he founded the magnificent capital city of Gangaikonda Cholapuram ('The City of the Chola who Took the Ganges') and constructed a massive artificial lake. In 1025 AD, he launched a daring trans-oceanic naval expedition across the Indian Ocean, sacking the maritime empire of Srivijaya (modern Indonesia and Malaysia), securing maritime trade corridors connecting India and Song China.
