Archival Overview

Legendary emperor of the Chola Empire who transformed southern India into a maritime superpower and erected the majestic Brihadisvara Temple.

Biographical Record

Rajaraja Chola I (born Arulmozhi Varman, 947–1014 AD) was one of the greatest emperors of the Chola dynasty, reigning from 985 until 1014. His military campaigns subjugated the Cheras, Pandyas, Western Chalukyas, and the island of Lanka (northern Sri Lanka), establishing Chola naval mastery over the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea, and the Bay of Bengal.

Rajaraja revolutionized administration through rigorous land cadastral surveys, reorganized village self-governing assemblies (sabhas), and sponsored a brilliant revival of Tamil literature and Saivite devotional hymns. In 1010 AD, he completed the Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, a peerless UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece of Dravidian architecture entirely constructed of granite.
