Biographical Record
Born Radhia Ben Ammar in Tunis to a patriotic bourgeois family, she rebelled against conservative domestic seclusion in youth, joining the nationalist struggle with the Neo-Destour. In 1958, President Bourguiba appointed her President of the National Union of Tunisian Women (UNFT).
For fifteen years, Haddad turned the UNFT into a powerful grassroots mobilization engine, opening hundreds of rural women's centers, promoting contraception and child welfare, and defending the historic Code of Personal Status (CSP). Elected MP for three terms, her courage in standing up for judicial independence remains iconic.
