Archival Overview

Founder and first monarch of the Majapahit Empire who outsmarted and repelled Kublai Khan's Mongol invasion fleet to unite the Indonesian archipelago.

Biographical Record

Raden Wijaya (reigned 1293–1309), crowned as Kertarajasa Jayawardhana, was the founder and first monarch of the Majapahit Empire, the greatest maritime empire in the history of the Indonesian archipelago. When his father-in-law King Kertanegara of Singhasari was overthrown by the rebel Jayakatwang of Kediri, Wijaya established a settlement in the Tarik timberland, naming it Majapahit after the bitter maja fruit.

When Kublai Khan's Mongol-Yuan punitive fleet arrived in 1293 to punish Singhasari, Wijaya allied with the Mongols to crush Jayakatwang, then turned on the unsuspecting Yuan army in a surprise counter-offensive, forcing them to evacuate Java. Crowned king in 1293, he laid the administrative foundations for an empire that would span modern Indonesia and Malaysia.
