Archival Overview

Founder and first monarch of the Majapahit Empire who brilliantly outmaneuvered and defeated Kublai Khan's Mongol invasion fleet in Java in 1293, founding Southeast Asia's greatest maritime empire.

Biographical Record

Following the murder of his father-in-law King Kertanegara of Singhasari by rebel Jayakatwang, Raden Wijaya took refuge in the Tarik forest, clearing land beside a grove of bitter 'maja' fruit trees (hence 'Majapahit').

When Kublai Khan's armada of 1,000 ships arrived in Java in 1293 seeking vengeance against Singhasari, Wijaya allied with the Mongols to crush Jayakatwang. He then launched a surprise counter-attack, routing the confused Mongol army back to their ships and crowning himself king of Majapahit on November 10, 1293.
