Archival Overview
One of Algeria's greatest post-independence novelists whose daring allegorical works, including 'The Honor of the Tribe' and 'The Damned', boldly scrutinized bureaucratic decay and religious extremism.
Biographical Record
Rachid Mimouni was born into a poor peasant family in the fertile Mitidja plain. Trained in science and economics, he taught at the École Supérieure de Commerce in Algiers while publishing some of the most powerful fiction in the Francophone world.
His masterpieces, such as 'Le Fleuve détourné' (1982) and 'L'Honneur de la tribu' (1989), used dark humor and fable to critique the betrayal of revolutionary ideals. Targeted by death threats from extremist militants during the Black Decade, he fled into exile in Morocco and France, dying at age forty-nine.
