Founder of the Antwerp school of painting whose masterwork 'The Moneylender and His Wife' established satirical secular genre painting and northern humanist portraiture.

Biographical Record

Quentin Matsys (1466–1530 CE) trained as a blacksmith before turning to painting, becoming the leading master in booming commercial Antwerp.

A close friend of Erasmus and Thomas More, he painted famous humanist portraits and pioneered moralizing satirical genre scenes exposing human greed and vanity.
