Biographical Record
Zein al-Sharaf bint Jamil was born in Cairo into an aristocratic Hashemite branch and married her cousin Prince Talal bin Abdullah in 1934. During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, she personally mobilized women across Jordan to establish emergency clinics and distribution centers for hundreds of thousands of destitute Palestinian refugees arriving in the kingdom.
Queen Zein founded the Jordanian Red Crescent Society in 1948 and established the Mabarrat Um al-Hussein orphanage in 1951. During the difficult medical abdication of King Talal in 1952, she played a vital, stabilizing constitutional role as mentor to her young eighteen-year-old son King Hussein, championing women's legal rights and social welfare until her death in 1994.
