Archival Overview
Powerful Eighteenth Dynasty Great Royal Wife of Amenhotep III, mother of Akhenaten and grandmother of Tutankhamun, renowned for her supreme diplomatic leadership documented in the Amarna Letters.
Biographical Record
Daughter of noble provincial courtiers Yuya and Thuya from Akhmim, Tiye married young Amenhotep III, rising to unprecedented imperial influence. She was depicted on monuments as equal in stature to her husband, wearing the horned sun-disc headdress and advising on imperial foreign policy.
Foreign monarchs, including King Tushratta of Mitanni, wrote directly to Tiye in the cuneiform *Amarna Letters* to negotiate marriages and gold treaties, recognizing that sovereign decisions flowed through her intellect. Her exquisite yew-wood portrait head in Berlin captures her piercing royal gaze and commanding presence.
