Archival Overview

First reigning queen regnant of Silla whose visionary statecraft, cultural renaissance, and Tang diplomacy laid the foundations for Korean unification.

Biographical Record

Queen Seondeok of Silla (died 647 AD, reigned 632–647) made history as the twenty-seventh monarch and first reigning queen of Silla, chosen under Silla's rigid 'bone rank' caste system due to the absence of male heirs of the sacred 'Holy Bone' (seonggol) class. Her reign marked a defining era of cultural flourishing, intellectual advancement, and tactical diplomacy.

Surrounded by hostile incursions from neighboring Goguryeo and Baekje, Seondeok forged a pivotal military alliance with Tang dynasty China and elevated brilliant commanders such as General Kim Yu-sin and statesman Kim Chun-chu. She championed Buddhism, commissioned the Cheomseongdae astronomical observatory—the oldest surviving observatory in East Asia—and erected the majestic nine-story wooden pagoda at Hwangnyongsa to spiritually protect the realm.
