Biographical Record
During historic treaty negotiations in Luanda in 1622, when the Portuguese governor provided only a floor cushion to assert racial inferiority, Nzinga ordered her maid to kneel on hands and knees to serve as an equal royal seat. Becoming Queen in 1624, she forged military alliances with the Imbangala and Dutch forces.
Leading troops into battle even in her sixties, she established fortified military bases (Kilombo) that successfully halted colonial encroachment into the Angolan interior, celebrated as a foundational heroine of African freedom and sovereignty.
