Archival Overview

Revered Queen Mother (Ndlovukati) of the Zulu Kingdom and mother of Shaka Zulu, whose resilience against hardship and wise counsel guided the founding and consolidation of the Zulu Empire.

Biographical Record

Born into the Langeni people, Nandi gave birth to Shaka out of wedlock with Zulu chief Senzangakhona. Subjected to social ostracism and famine, Nandi raised Shaka with extraordinary determination, fiercely protecting him until he assumed leadership of the Zulu kingdom in 1816.

Upon Shaka's rise to power, Nandi was elevated to supreme prominence as the Ndlovukati ('The Great She-Elephant') and accorded the title 'Queen of Queens'. She exercised immense political restraint on her son, offering counsel in statecraft and moderating punishments until her death in 1827, which was mourned across southern Africa.
