Biographical Record
Married to King Leopold I in Compiègne in 1832, Queen Louise brought vital diplomatic backing from France to the nascent Belgian kingdom. Highly cultured and fluent in multiple languages, she served as a key political correspondent and confidante to both her father and husband.
Beloved across Belgium for her tireless benevolence, she established soup kitchens, orphanages, and hospitals for impoverished workers in Brussels and Wallonia. Her early death from consumption in Ostend in 1850 plunged the nation into deep mourning, giving birth to the royal burial tradition at Laeken.
