Biographical Record
Born in the remote desert oasis of Kufra, Fatimah el-Sharif was the daughter of Sayyid Ahmad Sharif as-Senussi, supreme commander of the Libyan resistance against Italian colonization. Married to future King Idris I in 1931 in Egyptian exile, she returned to Libya upon national independence in 1951.
As Queen, she adopted a public role of refined dignity and active humanitarianism, serving as honorary patroness of the Libyan Red Crescent Society and funding the construction of women's hospitals and orphanages in Benghazi and Tripoli. Following the 1969 coup, she lived with quiet grace in Cairo until her passing at age 98.
