Archival Overview
Illustrious Queen Regnant (Kandake) of Meroe who ruled alongside King Natakamani with equal royal sovereignty, constructing hundreds of temples, water reservoirs (Hafirs), and pyramids.
Biographical Record
Queen Amanitore was one of the most powerful female rulers of antiquity, mentioned in ancient records and depicted on temple reliefs as wielding the royal mace of pharaonic authority. Her royal palace was located at Gebel Barkal, where her name appears in royal cartouches alongside King Natakamani.
During her reign, the Meroitic civilization constructed massive circular water retention reservoirs (Hafirs) that revolutionized agriculture in the desert steppe. She built her own grand steep-sided pyramid at Meroe (Beg. N 1), adorned with reliefs celebrating her eternal reign.
