When the Roman prefect Gaius Petronius invaded Nubia following the annexation of Egypt, Queen Amanirenas led Kushite warriors in a fierce counter-offensive, capturing Syene (Aswan), Elephantine, and Philae, and toppling statues of Caesar Augustus.

Her resolute resistance compelled Rome to negotiate directly at Samos in 21 BCE, exempting Kush from Roman taxation and establishing a mutually respected border that shielded Nubia from imperial conquest for three centuries.
