Archival Overview

Brilliant military genius and Emperor of Vietnam of the Tay Son Dynasty who crushed a 200,000-man Qing Chinese invasion force in a lightning surprise attack during Tet in 1789.

Biographical Record

Nguyen Hue (Quang Trung, 1753–1792) was the military spearhead of the Tay Son peasant revolution that broke the centuries-old feudal partition between the Trinh and Nguyen lords. In 1785, at the Battle of Rach Gam-Xoai Mut, he ambushed and destroyed a 50,000-man Siamese invasion fleet on the Mekong River.

In late 1788, when a Qing Chinese invasion of 200,000 troops occupied Hanoi, Quang Trung crowned himself Emperor, marched his army 650 kilometers north in twenty-four days, and launched a lightning dawn assault during the sacred Tet holiday. In five days, he smashed Qing fortifications at Ngoc Hoi and Dong Da, liberating Hanoi.
