Biographical Record
Purchased by Sultan Barsbay, Qaitbay rose through all ranks of the Mamluk hierarchy through exceptional discipline and piety, ascending the throne in 1468. He fought two successful wars against the rising Ottoman Empire, preserving Mamluk borders in Cilicia.
Qaitbay constructed over eighty monuments throughout the Islamic world. His fort on the ruins of the ancient Pharos of Alexandria (the Citadel of Qaitbay) and his breathtaking funerary complex in the Northern Cemetery of Cairo represent the zenith of late Mamluk stone carving.
