Archival Overview

Formidable Prime Minister of the Russian Empire whose Stolypin Agrarian Reforms created a class of private peasant landowners to stabilize Tsarist Russia against revolution.

Biographical Record

Pyotr Arkadyevich Stolypin (1862–1911) was a Russian statesman who served as Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior under Tsar Nicholas II from 1906 until his assassination in 1911. Gaining national renown for restored order as Governor of Saratov during the 1905 Russian Revolution, Stolypin combined ruthless suppression of revolutionary violence with radical socioeconomic modernization.

Stolypin's signature legacy was his sweeping Agrarian Reform program: he dismantled the ancient communal peasant mir (village commune), allowing peasants to buy consolidated private homesteads (khutor) with state bank credits, famously aiming to create a stable class of prosperous, conservative peasant landowners ('the wager on the sturdy and the strong'). He famously warned: 'Give the state twenty years of peace, internal and external, and you will not recognize Russia'. In September 1911, he was fatally shot at the Kyiv Opera House in the presence of the Tsar.
