Pyotr Kapitsa (1894–1984) trained under Ernest Rutherford at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, inventing magnetic solenoids generating unprecedented magnetic fields. Detained in the USSR during a visit in 1934, he founded the Institute for Physical Problems in Moscow.
In 1937, Kapitsa discovered that helium-4 cooled below 2.17 Kelvin exhibits superfluidity—flowing without any measurable viscosity. A courageous defender of academic freedom, he repeatedly shielded fellow scientists from Stalinist repression.
