Biographical Record

Pu Songling showed early academic brilliance but repeatedly failed the provincial civil service examinations, spending over forty years working as a private family tutor. Legend tells that he set up a roadside tea stand, offering free tea to travelers who stopped to share strange folktales and ghost legends.

Pu transformed these accounts into exquisite classical Chinese prose. His enchanting stories of loyal fox spirits, underworld magistrates, and courageous maidens celebrated genuine love while satirizing the greed, hypocrisy, and corruption of the Qing examination system and magistracy.
