Archival Overview

Last monarch of the Kingdom of Mauretania, co-ruler with his father Juba II, who assisted Rome in crushing the Tacfarinas rebellion before being assassinated by Emperor Caligula in 40 CE.

Biographical Record

Ptolemy of Mauretania (c. 1 BCE – 40 CE) was the only son of King Juba II and Queen Cleopatra Selene II, uniting in his bloodline the Numidian royal house and the Ptolemaic Pharaohs of Egypt. Educated in Athens and Caesarea, he assumed full sovereignty in 23 CE upon his father's death.

In 24 CE, Ptolemy deployed Mauretanian royal cavalry to help Roman Proconsul Dolabella trap and defeat the rebel Tacfarinas, for which the Roman Senate awarded him the ivory scepter and triumphal toga of a 'Friend and Ally of the Roman People'. In 40 CE, visiting Rome, Emperor Caligula grew jealous of Ptolemy's magnificent purple cloak in the amphitheater and ordered his assassination, annexing Mauretania.
