Biographical Record
Following Alexander's death in 323 BCE, Ptolemy astutely secured the satrapy of Egypt and brought Alexander's body to Alexandria. Adopting the Egyptian royal title of pharaoh while promoting Hellenistic culture, he defended his kingdom against rival Diadochi at the Battle of Gaza.
Ptolemy founded the Mouseion of Alexandria and began gathering the world's knowledge into the legendary Great Library. He also promoted the syncretic cult of Serapis to unite Greek and native Egyptian subjects.
