Miriam displayed fearless diplomatic courage as a young girl, orchestrating Pharaoh's daughter to hire Moses's own mother as his wet nurse. During the Exodus, she was recognized alongside Moses and Aaron as a primary national leader.

Her ecstatic victory song at the Sea of Reeds ("Sing to the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously") constitutes one of the oldest preserved poetic compositions in human literature. Jewish tradition links the miraculous traveling well of water in the desert to her merit.
