Zephaniah (Herald of the Day of the Lord)

Zephaniah (meaning 'The Lord has Hidden' or 'Treasured') stood in the direct royal lineage of Judah as the great-great-grandson of the righteous King Hezekiah. Using his access to the highest echelons of state, he fearlessly exposed the pagan idolatry, cynical materialism, and violence practiced by princes and court officials.

The Great and Terrible Day

Zephaniah's opening chapters describe the Dies Irae—the cosmic Day of the Lord—with breathtaking solemnity. He warned that neither gold nor silver could deliver those who complacently assumed God was indifferent to human evil. He directed his message to the gentle and lowly: 'Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought His judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness.'

Song of the Exultant God

Moving from thunderous warning to tender consolation, Zephaniah concluded with an astonishingly intimate image of the Divine: God Himself rejoicing over His restored, humble remnant with singing, quieting them in His love, and casting away their sorrow forever.
